Niger Delta: FG’s Strategic Implementation Work Plan (SIWP) will improve efficiency in project implementation – Edobor Iyamu

Speech by Mr. Edobor Iyamu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta, Office of the Vice President, at the launch of the Federal Government’s Strategic Implementation Work Plan (SIWP) by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in collaboration with development partners, on Thursday, December 2nd, 2021

PROTOCOL

It is an honour and privilege to be asked to deliver a goodwill message, on this very important milestone achievement of the Mohammad Buhari administration.

Over the years, we have been confronted with several challenges, which in turn has hindered government’s development efforts in project implementation in the Niger Delta. Some of the already identified challenges include:

  • The duplication of projects by different MDA’s responsible for the region
  • The MDA’s working in silos
  • The absence of transparency in project implementation.
  • The lack of public awareness of government’s projects and programs in the region.
  • An inefficient Monitoring and Evaluation mechanism.

Today however, we can confidently bid farewell to these challenges, all thanks to the introduction of an innovative solution called the Strategic Implementation Work Plan (SIWP).

The SIWP, essentially represents a database of projects, and their progress status handled within the Niger Delta region, which can now be accessed by the general public.

The aim is to promote the much-needed transparency and improve efficiency in project implementation by government agencies. Of course, provision is made in the document, to capture the development efforts of the private sector in the region.

In the light of the foregoing, I would like to offer special thanks to all stakeholders, who played key roles in ensuring that this initiative has become a reality for all to witness.

Permit me, to use this opportunity, to announce, that on the back of this success, the Federal Government intends to do more towards promoting transparency and accountability on the development strides taking place in the Niger Delta region.

To this end, this administration, in the coming months, will be showcasing what it has done to promote development in the Niger Delta region. We would be employing an evidence-based approach, so that the people of the region can truly recognize what the Federal Government has been doing for the Niger Delta region since 2015, when this administration came into being. This of course, will include the establishment of several modular refineries across the Niger Delta, the various gas initiatives, the Maritime University, the Ogoni Clean-up, Warri Itape rail to name but a few.

Finally, I urge the great people of Niger Delta, to maintain their trust in this administration and expect many more positive developments aimed at fulfilling President Mohammadu Buhari’s New Vision for the Niger Delta region, which speaks to a prosperous Niger Delta in which the people benefit maximally from the wealth of their region.

I Thank you for listening.
